Cute but Destructive…

Voles may look small, cute, and harmless, but can be very destructive. Voles are different from moles and mice, although they are often confused for one another. You may hear people refer to voles as field mice or meadow mice. A vole is a small rodent that is closely related to the mouse, but voles have a few characteristics that set them apart.

A vole has:

• a short, stout body
• a short, hairy tail
• small, rounded ears and beady eyes
• a blunt snout

Problems Caused by Voles

One of the biggest problems with voles is that they are very active, during the day and night. Voles are hungry when they are awake. Unfortunately for you and your garden, voles will feed on your lawn and/or plants if left untreated.

• tunnels across your lawn
• damage to flowers and garden crops
• damage to bottom of trees

Preventing Voles

Fortunately, there are ways to prevent voles from calling your lawn home. One way to prevent these pesky critters is to sprinkle your yard with a vole deterrent. You may wrap the base of a tree with a tree guard to prevent biting and ripping if you notice vole damage. You may also try trapping and releasing voles in another location, but they may find their way back or new voles may move in.
